Gathering of Resonateurs

A gathering of resonator enthusiasts - performers, luthiers, collectors - happened first in July 2000 in northwestern Pennsylvania where we then lived and again there each summer until 2005. In July 2005 we moved to Ithaca, NY and the event was relocated in Wilkesboro, NC where it has had three successful continuations. The numbers grow each year. The 2007 gathering attracted 68 folks who play resonator instruments. We are proud that we were able to initiate a tradition which allows players to informally hang out, exchange licks and ideas, and to perform for each other's enjoyment. Across these seven years the gathering has continued to provide a comfortable relaxed experience for folks who love to play the type of insruments originally created by John's father (John Dopyera) and Uncle Rudy (Rudolph Dopyera) during the 1920s.

For the first two years in North Carolina, Frank Maxfield was the gathering coordinator. Pammy Davis was the responsible person for the 2007 gathering and will continue in planning for 2008.

Our Lives in Ithaca, NY

We live in a small apartment in Ithaca - quite a contrast with our 28 room lodge in Pennsylvania. However, for us at this time in our lives, having almost everything we need within a couple blocks of where we live seems quite luxurious. We delight in the closeness of the Unitarian church, public library, the post office, banks, lawyers, movie theatre, live theatre, art galleries, lots of good acoustic live music, doctors. You get the picture, right? In our building which is a rennovated old high school, there are book stores, a natural foods store, a guitar shop, a toy store, a yoga center, and restaurants. We are on the third floor. Directly below us is the Moosewood Restaurant, of cookbook fame. We enjoy the progressive and diverse Ithaca community and the many opportunites available through Cornell University and Ithaca College.

And, very important to us, by living in Ithaca we are close to our central New York families - including seven grandchildren!
